Smith Street School in the Uniondale Union Free School District has recently launched their
Book of the Month Program to encourage the creation of classroom libraries, the love of reading
in scholars and book access for every class. Each month, every classroom at Smith Street
receives a copy of the selected book as it relates to their theme. This year the theme is ‘proceed as if success is inevitable’, and book titles were pre-selected to align to the theme.

Smith Street chose titles to highlight inclusivity, empathy, honesty and leadership. For September, they chose Young, Gifted and Black by Jamia Wilson. The book focuses on 52 Black Heroes from the past and present. For October, they chose ‘Little Dreamers’-Visionary Women
Around the World
, by Vashti Harrison, in which women’s leadership qualities and actions are the epitome of success in our world.

Smith Street celebrates each book by hosting a ‘school wide read’, which includes having the scholars read aloud selected pages, and excerpts from the book. Scholars are then encouraged to read independently or during book sharing. Uniondale teachers have developed ‘book of the month’ book libraries for children to read and share in addition to the experience of choosing books from the Smith Street Library. As the school year continues, the school will have approximately 10 titles disseminated to scholars by June of 2021. Photo of Books on a shelf with students names for Book of the Month

This initiative supports the Acting Superintendent’s vision to align book titles and authors to the District’s newly designed Culturally Responsive Curriculum. The Uniondale Union Free School District shares Smith Street School’s goal to promote reading, sharing and instill an overall love for literature in an inclusive and culturally relevant academic environment.
